John Harbison

AGMT Lead Proctor/Examiner

After nearly 40 years as a union glazier, John retired at the end of 2019. His career ended as a glazing superintendent for a large West Coast contractor involved in projects from mid-rises to high-rises and for clients ranging from tech companies and schools to hospitals and convention centers.

John’s leadership extended to a spot on the Local 1621 executive board, a role he continues to hold. His retirement coincided with the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, so after remodeling his house and tending his garden, he missed the camaraderie of working. He joined the AGMT program to continue interacting with members of his trade. John does most of the AGMT testing on the West Coast and appreciates the ability to promote continuing education and to encourage fellow glaziers to earn certification.

John divides time between his home in California and his girlfriend’s home in Hawaii. He’s proud of having raised his son and daughter as a single parent, and that his son followed him into glazing. John recently bought a travel trailer and loves getting away to camp, fish, or spend time in nature with his two grandsons.

“We know that taking tests is hard on some people. We try to make candidates feel comfortable and not look over their shoulders. We want everyone to have a fair chance to earn AGMT.”
